Kirk’s Journal: Discovering Berkshire - Inspiration for The Prince Regent

Berkshire, a county steeped in history and natural beauty. The journey began in the vibrant town of Windsor with the grandeur of the castle, with its stunning architecture and meticulously maintained gardens, made for a perfect day of exploration. I took a guided tour, learning about the rich history and royal connections, and afterward, I strolled along the River Thames, enjoying the picturesque views and the lively atmosphere of the town. My recent journey through this idyllic region was filled with delightful discoveries and unforgettable experiences that inspired our draught stout, The Prince Regent.

The Windsor Great Park

A highlight of my visit to Berkshire was exploring the grounds of Windsor Great Park, which were once home to a royal zoo established by The Prince Regent, George IV in the early 19th century. The zoo, though no longer in existence, left behind a legacy of exotic animals including giraffes, ostriches and a tortoise that once roamed these expansive grounds. Today, the park is a beautiful expanse of greenery, featuring ancient trees, tranquil lakes, and wide-open spaces perfect for leisurely walks or picnics. I wandered through the serene landscape, imagining the grandeur of the former zoo and the variety of creatures that might have surprisingly inhabited this royal retreat.

Strolling through Hungerford

Next, I made a stop in the charming town of Hungerford, known for its lovely high street lined with independent shops and galleries. As I explored, I discovered the town's rich history, including its links to the Kennet and Avon Canal, which adds a delightful touch to the scenic beauty of the area. In fact, I had already discovered the opposite end of the Kennet and Avon Canal during my trip to Wiltshire. I took a stroll along the canal, watching narrowboats glide by and enjoying the peaceful ambiance, admiring how this marvel of engineering connects right across the country and yet looks so natural. Hungerford's welcoming atmosphere and beautiful surroundings made it a perfect addition to my Berkshire adventure.

The Royal Ascot

I also visited Ascot, famous for its prestigious racecourse and the renowned Royal Ascot event. I learned about the history of the races and how The Prince Regent, George IV commissioned the Royal Enclosure and also set the stage for the first royal procession in 1820. The stunning architecture of the grandstand and the elegant atmosphere were truly captivating. People often associate Ascot with the horse racing but forget the name is derived from the nearby town. If admiring pretty architecture, waterways, nature and cute cafes is up your street, then it may be well worth paying a visit!

Conclusion

As I wrapped up my tour of Berkshire, I couldn’t help but appreciate the mix of history, culture, and natural beauty that Berkshire offers. With its charming towns and lovely scenery, it’s a destination that truly has something for everyone. Imbued with influences of days gone by and heavily influenced by The Prince Regent, George IV, my visit around Berkshire inspired the creation of our draught stout, The Prince Regent.

The Prince Regent possesses a regal allure, being a luxurious beer crafted to embody the grandeur and elegance of the Regency era. Known for its lavish extravagance, artistic innovation, and refined tastes, this period inspires a beer that celebrates sophistication. It marries the opulence of Windsor Castle, the charm of Henley-on-Thames, and the prestige of Ascot.
