Kirk’s Journal: Exploring Wiltshire - Inspiration for The West Saxon
Wiltshire, a beautiful county in the southwest of England, is a treasure trove of history and natural beauty. My recent travels there inspired our Session IPA, The West Saxon.
A Journey Through History
One of the highlights of the trip was visiting Stonehenge. Standing among the ancient Neolithic stones, I felt a profound connection to the past. The sheer size and mystery of this prehistoric monument is awe-inspiring, and the surrounding landscape, with its rolling hills and sheep-dotted fields, created a breathtaking backdrop. I spent time learning about the various theories surrounding its purpose—each one more intriguing than the last.
Next, I visited the medieval city of Salisbury, a vibrant city brimming with history and culture. The magnificent Salisbury Cathedral was an absolute highlight, boasting stunning Gothic architecture and the tallest church spire in the UK. Inside, I was captivated by the beautiful stained-glass windows and the historic Chapter House, which contains one of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta. After soaking in the history, I wandered through the charming streets of Salisbury, where independent shops and cafés beckoned me to take a break. The atmosphere was lively, filled with the chatter of locals and visitors alike, and I couldn’t resist picking up a few artisanal goods from the market.
I couldn’t miss a visit to Avebury, famous for its massive ritualistic stone circle constructed in the third millennium BC. Unlike Stonehenge, where you view from a distance, at Avebury, you can walk among the stones themselves! At almost 350m in diameter and wrapped with peaceful surroundings, the chance to get up close to this ancient site made for a truly immersive experience.
Charming Marlborough
Another standout gem on the journey was Marlborough, a picturesque town known for its wide high street lined with beautiful, historic buildings. The town exudes charm with its inviting atmosphere and vibrant community. As I wandered through the market, I was drawn to the unique boutiques and artisan shops, each offering something special—from handmade crafts to local produce. The friendly shopkeepers were eager to share stories about their products, making my shopping experience all the more enjoyable.
After exploring, I took a moment by the River Kennet. The riverside paths are ideal for a peaceful walks. Marlborough's combination of history, culture, and natural beauty truly captured my intrigue.
Wessex and the North Downs
Venturing into the Wessex Downs, a stunning area known for its rolling chalk hills and rich archaeological significance, the landscape is dotted with ancient sites that tell the story of Britain’s past. I set out on a hike along the Wessex Ridgeway, a long-distance trail that offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into the area's history.
As I ventured through the countryside, I couldn’t help but notice the patchwork of vibrant golden barley swaying gently in the breeze. Wiltshire is renowned for its fertile farmlands, and the sight of barley fields ready for harvest was a reminder of the region’s agricultural significance. Barley is a key crop in the area, essential not only for animal feed but also for brewing local ales, which made the visits to the pubs even more meaningful and ultimately inspired our Session IPA, The West Saxon.
One of the most fascinating sites I visited was West Kennet Long Barrow, a Neolithic burial mound that dates back over 5,000 years! Walking through the narrow entranceway and into the darkness, I emerged inside a stone-lined chamber feeling like I’d travelled back in time. The air was thick with millennia of activity and I couldn’t help but imagine the rituals and ceremonies that may have taken place there.
Nearby, I explored the Silbury Hill, the largest man-made mound in Europe. I marvelled at the scale of this ancient structure, whose purpose still remains a mystery. The surrounding landscape, with its lush fields and serene atmosphere, made for a perfect setting to reflect on the enigmatic nature of these ancient sites.
As I continued my travels I came across the White Horse of Uffington, a prehistoric hill figure carved into the chalk hillside. This iconic representation of a horse is believed to date back to the Iron Age. The views from the hill were spectacular, providing a sweeping panorama of the Vale of White Horse, and I took a moment to appreciate the landscape that has inspired so many throughout the ages.
It’s fair to say, the Wessex Downs are not only a natural paradise but also a testament to the rich history that permeates the region.
Conclusion
My journey through Wiltshire was a wonderful blend of history, nature, and local charm. From the ancient mysteries of Stonehenge and Avebury to the quaint streets of Marlborough and the breathtaking landscapes of the Wessex North Downs, every moment inspired our IPA, The West Saxon. If you’re seeking an enchanting destination filled with rich heritage and stunning scenery, Wiltshire should be right at the top of your list!
